A trip to the pumpkin patch...

Big doings today.  Little Miss had her first field trip AND her first time to ride on a "yellow dog" school bus.  I played hooky so I could chaperone.  On our way into school, she asked if we would be riding a "yellow hound" or a "grey hound" bus.  She expressed a preference for the "grey hound,"  but was excited either way.  It was a combined kindergarten and 1st grade adventure.
We had a perfect day for it.

After our sack lunch (at 10:30!), there was time for a visit to the petting zoo area.

One of the dads seemed to have a real bond with the donkey.  A fellow democrat?  Doubt it, alas.

Waiting for the entertainment to start.  We got to hear about how the pumpkin/Christmas tree farm got its start.  I have to give it to the lady-farmer, she kept a good sized group of kids under control and entertained.  There was another group there from an elementary school in Fort Worth.  Lots of little bodies zooming around.  I don't know how elementary school teachers can deal with all that energy all the time.  Yikes!

Off to the hay-ride!

We stopped at the play area and I answered the call for parent volunteers--I was at the back of the ride, so it was easiest for me to get off.  I would have much rather followed her around taking pictures (can you believe that?).  Instead I had to climb a ladder to the second floor of the slide/fort and keep kids from going up to the third floor.  Big fun.  Little Miss occasionally stopped by to say "hi".  With the slide/fort, tire swings, chain walk, wooden maze, rope trampoline, "old west" buildings, and lots of room to just run and scream, she had lots of other things to do.

On the ride back to the barn, there was a little less energy buzzing.

Next up:  marshmallow roasting.  I was a little nervous about that many little fingers/mouths and hot metal sticks, but all went well...even those who had coated their marshmallows in the ashes seemed perfectly pleased.

We viewed a film made by the farmer's family about growing pumpkins in Texas. Then on to the scarecrow dressing race.

This is what they had all been eyeing and waiting for since we first walked past it.

Molly, Little Miss and I had visited here two years ago.  She seemed to have a lot more fun this time..with her friends...sniffle.
They have quite a selection of pumpkins and gourds.  I've heard there's a pumpkin shortage this year, and if you want canned pumpkin for your holiday pies, start buying cans now when you find them at the supermarket.  Given all that I've seen this weekend and today...I'm not terribly worried.

Of course, everyone got to pick out and bring home a pumpkin!

Here's our lucky winner.

And here we are heading back to the "yellow dog."

There are only two boys in her class, so the gentlemen are in demand.  I got kicked out of my seat so this one could ride with Little Miss.

They played games on my phone for a while.  Then he was lured one row back by a couple of other girls in class.  It should be interesting to watch these dynamics as the years go by.
